The Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is playing host to an international art Biennale themed "Meet on the Silk Road". It features works by 18 countries that the ancient silk road passed through. And it's the only arts biennale organized by China's Ministry of Culture in China.
The first ever Xinjiang Arts Biennale presents more than 700 works created by artists from the silk road countries, including China, Nepal, Turkey and Greece.
Historically, Xinjiang has seen a convergence of cultures, with merchants exchanging goods at its "bazaars" and resting at its oases after long treks through the desert. That makes it an appropriate venue for such an international gathering. The Biennale includes paintings, installations, photography and sculptures.
