Water Heavens is an entirely original conception by Tan Dun, celebrated Chinese contemporary classical composer. The one-hour show features four chapters: Dialogue between the Monks and Bach, Water Rock and Roll, String Quartet and Pipa, and the Four Seasons of Zen. Monks and Bach are not normally mentioned in the same sentence, let alone appear alongside each other in one musical performance. The audience is presented with this juxtaposition as the curtains open: Bach’s String Quartet is playing, while the deep resonance of monks’ chanting provide otherworldly accompaniment. The chapter is successful; audiences feel a dichotomy of space and time, and this continues throughout the performance.
