Italian Maestro Pollini Piano Recital in Beijing

“The elements in this recital such as ‘Pollini’, ‘Chopin’ and ‘National Center for the Performing Arts’ will surely attract a wide audience”, observed the well-known Chinese Pianist Yundi Li.

Like many musicians who demand high standards for their musical instruments, Pollini travels with his own piano on concert tours, including this tour.

“The musical instrument is so important to a musician. To me, each musical instrument has its own personality, and the cooperation over years also achieves a tacit agreement. This agreement can guarantee the quality of the performance,” says Pollini.

Pollini’s Biography and Career

Maurizio Pollini was born in Milan on January 5, 1942, the son of the Italian rationalist architect Gino Pollini. He debuted at the age of nine and enjoyed the reputation as a “child prodigy of music”. In 1957, he won the second prize at the Geneva International Piano Competition. In 1959 he received a diploma from the Milan Conservatory. In 1960 he won the first prize at the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition, after which he became famous and studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.

Since the 1960s, he has given recitals in Europe and the United States and worked with the most distinguished orchestras and conductors including Böhm, Celibidache, Karajan, Abbado, Boulez, Chailly, Mehta, Sawallisch, and Muti. His exactness and exceptional technique saw his work referred to “as clean as those cultivated in the disinfection chamber”.
