The acclaimed Italian classical pianist Maurizio Pollini will play at the National Center for the Performing Arts on 24th April. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the day, Pollini made his debut in China in October 2006, presenting a splendid recital at the 9th Beijing International Music Festival. His brilliant performance brought him much praise at the time. Now audiences in Beijing have a chance to welcome him back and this time he is going to play seven pieces by Chopin.
Pollini’s Piano Recital in Beijing
Pollini is ranked as one of the top ten contemporary pianists in the world. His repertoire ranges from Bach to the most daring contemporary music and includes the cycle of the complete Beethoven sonatas.
Pollini is especially noted for his performances of Chopin. As the authority on performing Chopin’s works, he is the first among the Italian pianists to have played the complete Chopin nocturnes. His recent recording of Chopin nocturnes was received with great enthusiasm by audiences and critics, and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist.
However, in his last recital in Beijing, Pollini only played two of Chopin’s works, which seemed not enough for the audience. This time, seven pieces by Chopin are going to be performed by Pollini. The selected ones range from preclude to Ballade, from sonata to scherzo, covering almost all the representative works of Chopin.
