Medea
Directed by: Dimitris Papaioannou
Beijing, National Centre for Performing Arts, August 1-2, 2008
Medea is a tragedy written by Euripides, based on the myth of Jason and Medea and first produced in 431 BC. She is one of the most famous vengeance seeking females in Greek mythology. She is also the protective goddess of all women betrayed and burned by jealousy. Incorporating modern dance techniques, the director presented "Medea" with an all-new cast and a different look in China.
"Regarding the story, I'm interested to be closer to the emotions of the betrayed woman and to meditate about the eternal difference between male and female. On another level, I'm interested in how to tell a story without words and how to create a dreamlike, surrealistic universe of Greek memories." Said Dimitris Papaioannou.
The use of water is actually the key element for the arrangement of space in the dance of Medea. The suspense builds through the presence of water, and the evolution of the water’s symbolism – starting as the sea and ending as blood – are basic elements of the director’s story-telling.
