Yue Minjun
Born in 1962, in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Yue Minjun is another pioneer of Cynical Realism in China. He's well-known for works featuring legions of colorful smiling figures.
The figures in his paintings look alike, all ecstatic with big faces, wide open mouths, and closed eyes. Yet, the laughing figures do not, according to Yue, embody an unbridled ecstasy and content over China's economic take-off in recent decades. On the contrary, the artist creates them to cast doubt on a reality in disarray.
