Wang Guangyi
Wang Guangyi, born in 1957 in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is best-known for his Great Criticism series of Cultural Revolution-style paintings emblazoned with the names of popular Western brands, like Coke, Visa, Swatch and Gucci.
Wang is a pioneer of "Political Pop" that creates unexpected juxtapositions. In his work, Maoist propaganda finds itself coupled with Coca-Cola logos, and the heroes of the Cultural Revolution are surrounded by corporate advertisements. Wang Guangyi combines the pop style of Andy Warhol with the visual culture of China's Culture Revolution. By disintegrating the political symbol of the Culture Revolution, Wang Guangyi clears up and satirizes the utopian illusion of the Culture Revolution, and praises the new consumption commercial awareness.
