"Jinghaihun", or "The Soul of Macao", focuses on a famous incident in the city's history - the only assassination of a Portuguese governor during its 450 years as a colony.

To fight against a heavy taxation system and the ill treatment of the people, villager Shen Zhiliang kills the governor with the help of a group of locals.

All the performers are from the Peking Opera Troupe of the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group. The play is written by renowned Macao writer Mu Xinxin.

"When the idea of taking the story to the stage, I only had one choice - to make it into a Peking Opera show. I believe it's the best way to present such a story," said Mu.

Although the tale dates back to more than 150 years ago, Mu artfully combines modern Macao elements into it.

The show features Kungfu, as well as Macao's signature drunken dragon performance.

"Audiences can enjoy some authentic Macao culture in the show. There is an amazing mix of Chinese and Portuguese cultures," she said.

The show also features famous Peking Opera artist Wu Lei, and will make its debut in Nanjing on July 29th. Audiences in Macao will get the chance to see the show in January of next year.
