Wuning County

Wuning County is located in northwest Jiangxi province which was the fiefdom of the Duke of Ai during the Shang Dynasty. Residents in Wuning County are open and bold, and possess strong local characteristics.

Saying blessings on different occasions is welcomed in the county, as it is one of the local customs.

The Five Blessings at the Door

As the story goes, there once was a rich man who built a new house, and when the house was completed he asked family servants to throw coins, peanuts, melon seeds, and small nails to the villagers for good luck. Afterwards he said whoever gave the best blessings, the winner would receive 12 pieces of silver. The villagers became very excited, and made many blessings, but nothing was able to attract the rich man’s heart. During this time a carpenter who worked in the corner of the rich man’s house accidentally broke some of his fingers, and he got mad and threw his hammer and shouted,:”That’s driving nails in the coffin.”
