With the town's increasing popularity, the number of tourists skyrocketed. Many people in the town opened hotels and restaurants, and sold souvenirs.

"Life is much better and busier," Zhu says.

"People used to go to bed after the sunset," he says. "Days like that are long gone."

IF YOU GO

Zhouzhuang is 60 km away from Shanghai and 40 km from Suzhou, in Jiangsu province.

To reach it, you can drive southward along the Shanghai-Nanjing Highway to Zhouzhuang, taking the Kunshan exit.

You can also travel to Shanghai, Suzhou or Kunshan by train first, and then transfer to Zhouzhuang by the regular bus service.
