Folk Art in the Ton

It is common knowledge that China has a long history and glorious history in both arts and traditional crafts, and most of folk arts and crafts are rooted in the vast rural areas. People living in cities are surrounded by more and more high-tech products that are born from assembly lines, which are devoid of inventiveness and creativity. One may be impressed when lighted on an unostentatious hand-made little craft, not knowing that it may be a common thing in rural villages.

Tangible or intangible, these folk arts and crafts are not only the embodiment of the people’s longing for aesthetic beauty for themselves and as gifts for others, but also great treasures for China and the rest of the world. Folk arts and crafts are made of simple materials by unique methods, and have more practical value because they are created according to people’s summary on long-term life experiences.

In recent years, more and more folk arts and crafts set foot into people’s vision thanks to the policy of promoting the development of culture and the results of Chinese intangible cultural heritage protection. The Chinese lunar new year is the best time for craftsmen to show off their unique skills. At temple fairs across the county, various little knickknacks and flawless techniques attracted people’s attention such as new year paintings, paper cuttings, shadow play, kites, dough figurines, hairy monkeys and inner painting bottles.
