Loy Krathong in Thai

WACCCE 2020-09-04

The custom of Loy Krathong began during the Kingdom of Sukotai in the mid-13th century. According to records, the king of Thailand would take a dragon boat tour along the river late at night on Dec 15 in the Thai calendar, and the queen and concubines would follow the king. While the people were paddling in the river, Concubine Nopalmer made a lotus lantern and floated it over the river for the king to enjoy. Since then, the ritual has become a tradition. On this day, ordinary people make their own water lamps, decorated with flowers and candles, then floating them in the pool or river.
