Going-on in China: Titanic, the Unsinkable

A 3D version of Titanic has been reproduced by its mastermind James Cameron and was globally released on April 10, 2012 to commemorate the centenary of the tragedy.

Probably one of the most acclaimed epic disaster films in human history, Titanic, which debuted in 1997, has become an anthem for a generation. Its theme song, My Heart Will Go On, is overly ubiquitous at many public or private occasions as provocative background music.

A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack) and Kate Winslet (Rose) as members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. The wreckage on April 15, 1912, left more than 1,500 people dead and the colossal ship has been reposing in the depths of the Atlantic.

The film has now staged a comeback. With the aid of advanced technology, a 3D version of Titanic has been reproduced by its mastermind James Cameron. It was released on April 10, 2012 to commemorate the centenary of the tragedy.

The mass media stirred into a public hysteria about the film, with acres of reports and features on the newspapers and websites. The box office, reportedly exceeding 70 million yuan in the first day upon its release in the Chinese mainland, proved that its charm still allured.

Most of the captive audience was young people who saw the film as a teen and have started a family now. With their husbands or wives sitting beside, they sought to plumb again into the depth and power of true love.
