The Beijing Art Season 2026 opened on Friday at the iconic 798 Art District, marking the start of a month-long cultural celebration that will ripple across the entire Chinese capital. With more than 400 events involving nearly 20 countries, this year's edition is the most ambitious yet — an unmistakable signal that Beijing is staking its claim as a world-class center for contemporary art.
Celebrated Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, herself a passionate art collector and patron, was appointed as the season's ambassador, lending a prominent public face to the festivities.
A festival built on four pillars
This year's Art Season is organized around four thematic sections — Collection, Roaming, Convergence, and Symbiosis — each designed to engage a different dimension of the art world, from elite collectors to curious first-time visitors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Zheng Fang, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau, articulated the broader ambition driving the event at the opening ceremony.
"Beijing has always adhered to shaping the city with culture and prospering industries with art. We are deeply advancing the integrated development of culture, commerce, and tourism, fully unleashing art's potential to empower industries and stimulate consumption," she said. "This year's Art Season attracts global artistic resources to Beijing, making art a powerful force in driving urban development and enhancing the city's vitality."
The market at its best
The "Collection" section of the season features two flagship events. Gallery Weekend Beijing, celebrating its 10th anniversary and running from May 22 to May 31, unites over 200 galleries and non-profit organizations in a rich showcase of the capital's contemporary art scene.
Alongside it, the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair brings together 143 institutions at the National Agricultural Exhibition Center from May 21 to May 24, creating a vibrant marketplace for collectors, curators, and enthusiasts to discover and acquire new work.
One of the most significant developments this year is a first-of-its-kind partnership with four of China's leading auction houses: China Guardian, Beijing Poly International Auction, Sungari International Auction, and Cuppar Auction. By forging a direct link between the primary gallery market and the secondary auction market, the Art Season establishes a complete industry loop — from the cultivation and exhibition of art to its collection and ongoing circulation.
Organizers believe this structural innovation will boost the vitality and liquidity of Beijing's art ecosystem, giving artists, galleries, and buyers a more dynamic and interconnected marketplace.
Citywide art
For the first time, the Art Season extends its reach across seven major urban districts — Chaoyang, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Haidian, Fengtai, Shunyi, and Shijingshan — turning the entire city into an open-air gallery.
Digital video works have been woven into public spaces such as the scenic Liangma River waterfront and the Universal Creative Park, while large-scale sculpture installations animate the Beijing Olympic Forest Park and the banks of Liangma River.
Organizers believe the design is to allow art is not confined to institutions but encountered in people's daily lives — on a riverside walk, in a park, or at a shopping destination.
Beijing as global cultural crossroads
The "Convergence" section reinforces Beijing's role as a meeting point for international culture.
A major Brazil-themed exhibition will take center stage in honor of the 2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year, while a children's painting exhibition on ecological education — jointly curated by UNESCO, the Beijing Zhongjin Charity Foundation, and the China Green Carbon Foundation — will be launched at the 798 Art District.
Several international cultural centers based in Beijing, including the Cervantes Institute, the Danish Cultural Institute, the Korean Cultural Center, and the Goethe-Institut, are also presenting diverse exhibitions throughout the season, ensuring a genuinely global perspective.
Engaging every visitor
The final section, "Symbiosis," focuses on making art accessible and enjoyable for all. A special 10th-anniversary Gallery Weekend Beijing pass gives holders entry to 15 world-class institutions, including 798 CUBE and the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art.
In a playful fusion of technology and culture, a collaboration with Alipay's "Tap!" feature brings NFC-enabled interactive experiences to the festival. Visitors can collect limited-edition NFC ticket stubs at official service points, then use the Art Season's mini-program on Alipay to participate in check-in activities and unlock discounts on dining, accommodation, and retail.
Beijing Art Season 2026 runs through June 15. It is hosted by Beijing 798 Culture and Technology Co, under the guidance of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the Chaoyang District People's Government of Beijing Municipality, and Beijing Electronics Holdings Co.
