Introduction
A small island off Xiamen in Fujian province, the 2 km² Gulangyu is a tourist attraction where the only vehicles allowed to be used are fire trucks and electric tourist buggies. From the 18th century to the early 19th century the island was a major center for trade and also missionary activities. Indeed, its Victorian buildings were once home to trading firms, consulates and cathedrals, which in turn used to be the only international settlement in China before the more celebrated Shanghai International Settlement. In 1842 Xiamen was opened as a port to the outside world following China's defeat during the First Opium War. This resulted in Gulangyu attracting foreign businessmen and organizations from many countries. As part of the cultural exchange, the foreign residents introduced local Western musical instruments such as the piano. Indeed, the island at one time hosted the only piano museum in China, earning it the nickname of "Piano Island" and "Island of Music". In 2017, Gulangyu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
