Lyceum Theatre, founded in 1930, was renamed Shanghai Arts Theatre in 1952. Its original name was re-established in 1991. Before 1949, Lyceum Theatre was used by a well-known Shanghai amateur drama company, mainly for presenting theatrical performances and motion pictures. Later, under the leadership and the care of the Communist Party of China, the theatre became increasingly well equipped. Lyceum Theatre is located on Mao Ming Road, situated among some first-class hotels such as Garden Hotel, Jin Jiang Hotel, etc. The theatre boasts a graceful environment with convenient transportation that makes it a theatre of fame.
Entering the 21st Century, the theatre took on a brand new look, thanks for the exquisite design of engineers from Singapore. The rebuilt stage has retained the original elegant European architectural style. Moreover, it has become even more technically advanced. The simple facade looks classical and unsophisticated: lit up with refulgent and glittery lights at night, reminding passersby of the glorious history of the theatre. The design of the auditorium is a combination of contemporary nostalgia and Roman architecture of the 18th Century, giving it a feeling of resplendence, magnificence and pageantry.
Lyceum Theatre, with a seating capacity of 680, is suitable for performances of drama, small scale musical and symphony concerts. The rebuilt theatre is equipped with advanced international sound & lighting and monitoring systems such as from U.S., Japan, and Germany. It therefore can meet the requirements of sophisticated performances. The modern stage equipments integrated with a golden arch ceiling, which symbolizes the high-standing of Lyceum Theatre's performance career, offer the audience with a feeling of the theatre's exquisiteness and delicacy.
Over the past seventy years, Lyceum Theatre has been presenting a variety of performances. Performing companies from both Shanghai and all over the country, and a large number of renowned artists, such as Mei Lanfang, Zhou Xinfang, Yu Zhenfei, Zhao Dan, Qin Yi and Zhou Xiaoyan etc. all shining stars of the past, perform on its stage, making the theatre a true hall of fame.
Lyceum Theatre is also built with VIP rooms, a coffee shop and various other function rooms including dressing rooms, all reflecting the design concept of originality and reminiscence of the past.
