The drama Tea House was written by the noted modern Chinese writer Lao She in 1956 and first staged by Beijing People's Art Theatre in 1958. Set in a tea house and involving over 70 characters, the drama is a snapshot of the society, portraying the lives of people of various strata through the changes of over half a century.
