Site of the Huangpu Military Academy

 

The Huangpu Military Academy site, in actuality the Army Military College, lies on Changzhou Island in Huangpu, over 20 kilometers from the southeast Guangzhou City of Guangdong Province.

HuangpuMilitaryAcademywas the result of the first KMT-CCP cooperation. It was founded in May 1924 when the KMT had just accomplished a reshuffling with assistance from the Communist International and the China Communist Party, when the First Congress of the KMT of China had just closed. To cultivate military officers for the revolution, Sun Yat-sen chose the old residence of theGuangdongNavalAcademyandArmyAcademyas the site for theArmyMilitaryCollege.

Huangpu Military Academy was led by Sun Yat-sen, general director; Chiang Kaishek, president; Zhou Enlai, dean of the political department; Ye Jianying, deputy dean of the teaching department and other communists, such as Xiong Xiong, Yun Daiying, Xiao Chunv and Nie Rongzhen, who served as instructors. The academy offered courses in infantry, artillery, military engineering, politics, military police and orderly. From 1924 to 1927,HuangpuMilitaryAcademyoffered four terms of study to 4,981 students. Some of the school's students included Liu Zhidan, Chiang Xianyun, Xu Xiangqian, Chen Geng, Zuo Quan, Xu Jishen, Zhou Yiqun, Zhou Shidi, Lu Deming, Tao Zhu and other proletarian revolutionists and military officers of the older generation.

In the war to unifyGuangdongProvinceand the Northern Expedition War, teachers and students ofHuangpuMilitaryAcademyrendered military exploits repeatedly.

Many relics, such as the Huangpu Military Academy gate, Sun Yat-sen's old residence, the monument to Sun Yat-sen, the mausoleum for the martyrs of the Dongjiang Battle and the academy club, still remain at the site to this day. Also on display at Sun Yat-sen's old residence is the Exhibition Hall for the historical materials ofHuangpuMilitaryAcademy.
