Heyday of Kaiyuan

During the Kaiyuan reign (713-741) of Emperor Xunzong, Tang (618-907) Empire justifiably became the largest, richest, most sophisticated state in the world at that time.

In the first year of Kaiyuan reign (713), Emperor Xuanzhong was able to pacify political chaos and brought a peaceful and prosperous life to his people. During his reign, Xuanzong started construction on irrigation works and attached importance to commerce. People enjoyed their safe and comfortable lives with abundant food and cloth, cheap products and convenient transportation. The prosperity of economy contributed to the development of literature and art, in which Tang poems earned the most credit. Artworks in music, painting and sculpture also achieved great success.

Greatly and widely admired abroad, the influence of Tang in the Kaiyuan reign spread to Asia, Europe and Africa. Neighboring countries sought and established ties with the empire and Chang'an (today's Xi'an City) became the center of cultural exchange between the East and the West.
