Emmanuel Diaz, a Portuguese, entered the Chinese mainland in 1610 in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and began to missionize inGuangzhou.
From 1614 to1615, he acted as the head of theChinaand Japan Parish. In 1623, he became the chief of the China Parish of the Society of Jesus.
In 1626, he went toNanjingCity, later toShanghaiandHangzhoucities,JiangxiandFujianprovinces. Afterwards, he settled down inHangzhou. In 1659, he died there.
