Yang Wenyi

 

Yang Wenyi, one of Five Golden Flowers inChina's swimming, was born inShanghaionJanuary 11, 1972. She began to attend regular swimming training at the age of 6, and entered theShanghaimunicipal team in 1984 and the national team in 1986.

In 1987, she and her teammates finished 3rdin women's 4x100m medley relay in the 2ndPan Pacific Swimming Championships before she broke the record of women's 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke in the 6thNational Games.

In 1988, she collected the 50m and 100m freestyle gold medals and broke the 50m world record in the Asian Championships. Two years later, she claimed both the 50m freestyle and 4x100 freestyle relay golds in the 11thAsian Games.

In 1992, Yang won the women's 50m freestyle in the 4thAsian Championships before she collected the gold of women's 50m freestyle and broke the world record.

The following year, she finished the 1stin women's 50m freestyle in the East Asian Games and swept the golds of women's 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay in the 7thNational Games.

After this event, Yang retired and went to theUnited Statesto study. Now she is the chairperson of the board in Shanghai Jinyi Sports Publicizing Co., Ltd.
