Hong Shen, a Chinese film theorist, playwright and director.
Before the year 1911, Hongshen studied inShanghaiXuJiaHui public school,NanYangpublic school andTianjinLingDangGe School, and in 1912, he attended Qinghua University. At public expense, he went abroad and further studied at Ohio University, and majored in enamel ware. But he changed his major to drama in 1919, and finally got his graduate's degree at Harvard University.
Hongshen returned in 1922, and taught inFuDan University,JiNanUniversity, and ShanDong University. In the year 1924, he began his movie career, and at the same time, he made some sincere friends such as TianHan and Xiayan. During his teaching career in FuDan University, he founded the "FuDan" drama community, and greatly speeded up the drama activities in the University. Then he, with TianHan and other people, founded the "Drama Community" and "the South Community," and they successfully directed a play and made the main actress become famous in the whole nation. He edited more than 10 films, and established a film university, which trained and produced a lot of professional film actors. There was no script in the early film industry, and Hongshen's literature script "ShenTuShi," which was based on the traditional historical event, was a significant improvement in the film industry. He indeed made great contribution to the development of Chinese drama.
During the period of the Liberation War, Hongshen organized a strike in Shanghai, and also actively took part in some anti-war movements.
He also played many important roles in our new nation. For example, he was the vice president of the Chinese Writing Union, and representatives of the First National Congress. He died of lung cancer inBeijingon August 29, 1955.
