An Indissoluble Bond with "3"
Throughout his life, Qiao Yu has forged an indissoluble bond with the number "3."
Qiao has had three names: his first name was Qiao Qingbao, given by his parents. Eighteen years later, when Qiao joined the revolution, he changed his name to Qiao Yu, his second name. His third name, Qiao Laoye (formerly, Laoye was used by officals and so on), was best known in literary and art circles. As Qiaoyu said, "Even Premier Zhou Enlai called me Qiao Laoye."
Apart from his three names, Qiao has three hometowns: the first is Jining City of Shandong Province, where he was born and lived for 18 years; the second is Taihang Mountain, where he joined the revolution and entered the university. He lived there for six years prior to and after liberation. Then he moved to his third hometown -Beijing, where he has worked and lived ever since.
Qiao has created thousands of songs, and some critics said three of these songs can be hailed as national songs, they are: "Lets' Pull on the Oars," which was written for children; "Sunset Glow" for old people; and "My Motherland" for all Chinese people. Besides, he has three titles: playwright, lyricist, and president of the China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre.
Tolerance in Love and Marriage

Qiao Yu and his wife, Tong Qi |
On June 19, 1994, Qiao Yu and his wife celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. To celebrate the event, their children chose an elegant and spacious dance hall. To their surprise, hundreds of relatives and friends and even the reporters from CCTV, attended the event. Seeing the couple so happy, a young friend sighed with deep emotion, "It's really amazing for a man and a woman to live together for 40 years."
When asked by the young man about his opinion on marriage, Qiao asked, "How to say?"
The young man answered, "Tell the truth."
With a goblet in his hand, Qiao, looking around the room, said. "to tell the truth, I have only one word - bear (忍)." Upon hearing this, his wife said, "I have two words - bear and forbear (一忍再忍)."
Suddenly, the dance hall was turned into an ocean of clapping and laughter.
Qiao has always been indifferent to rank, fame, and fortune. An optimistic and open-minded man, he loves to drink a little wine and smoke sometimes. He also likes to make friends of various kinds. He divides a day into two parts. In the morning, he will write and refuse to meet any visitors or friends, and in the afternoon, he will do something freely, whether meet visitors, chat with an old friend, or go for a walk. In his spare time, he loves fishing most, especially in the rain.
Such is Qiao Yu, an outstanding lyrics writer who has given birth to over one thousand songs, which, though short (in length), represents his sincerity, friendliness and kindness, and which have grasped the hearts of millions of Chinese people.
