Black Muntjac

 

With the aliases of Red-headed Blue Muntjac, Black Aurum Muntjac or Head-hooded Muntjac, it belongs to the Cervidae family of Artiodactyl order. Its scientific name is Muntiacus crinifrons (Latin), or Black Muntjac (English).        

Its body is larger than other muntjac's, with 100 to 110 centimeters in body length, about 60 centimeters in shoulder height and 21 to 26 kilograms in body weight. The male has horns, and the knob of the horns is comparatively long. Between vertex and the two horns there is a tuft of brown pappus of 5 to 7 centimeters. The hair of the upper portion is dun in winter, and in summer it is brown. Its tail is comparatively long, exceeding 20 centimeters in general. Its back is black .The inner side of its tail has pure white hair. The white tail fully strikes the eye.

It inhabits in jungles of the uplands. It is timid and coward, with strong alert sense, mostly leading a solitary life. It has the habit of wandering around to look for food till it is full. It eats branches and leaves of arbor and frutex, flower, fruit or herbaceous plant. The period of its breeding is unfixed. Its gestational period lasts about 6 months, with one baby per fetus.

Black muntjac is an animal endemic to China. It has high research and economic value. It is produced in Anhwei province, Zhejiang province, Jiangxi province and Fujian province. Black muntjac is enlisted in Appendix I ofInternational Trade Convention on Endangered Wild Animal and Plant Species.
