Hunuman Langur

 

With the alias of Guenon, it belongs to the Cercopithecidae family of Primates order. Its scientific name is Presbytis entellus (Latin), or Hanuman Langur (English).       

Its body is about 70 centimeters long, and weighs about 20 kilograms. The tail is even longer than the body. It has bushy beard and eyebrows. The body hair is mostly grey, yellow and brown, with black face and hoar forehead, cheek, chin and larynx.

It inhabits in tropical rain forests, subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests, and mixed broadleaf-conifer forests, at an elevation below 3,000 meters. It dwells on trees, but is also able to walk on the ground. It usually moves about in groups of tens in morning and dusk, haunting about stone cliffs in woods on both sides of the valley and feeding on leaves and wild fruit.

It breeds all the year round, mostly giving birth to babies in April or May. Female monkey's gestation period lasts 190 to 210 days, who breeds once every two years, with 1 to 2 babies every time. The female grows to sexual maturity at the age of 4, while the male at the age of 6 or 7. Under breeding condition, it can have a lifespan of about 25 years.

Hunuman Langur has a narrow distribution and a small quantity in China, only found in southern Tibet Autonomous Region, where now Jiangcun and Zhangmugou Natural Protection Areas have been established to protect this species.

It has been listed in Appendix I ofInternational Trade Convention on Endangered Wild Animal and Plant Species.
