It belongs to the Cercopithecidae family of Primates order, with the Latin name of Macaca assamensis, and the English name of Assam Macaque.
Its body is 56 to 65 centimeters in length and 12 to 14kilograms in weight. The tail is 23 to 25 centimeters long. It looks like macaque, but more stocky. The whole body is dark brown, with incarnadine cheek.
It inhabits in forests of tropical and subtropical mountainous regions, generally forming groups of 10 to 30. It usually stays on phanerophyte, and seldom goes down to the ground. Mainly, it feeds on vegetal food, including fruits, roots, stems, buds and tree barks, as well as some insects. Baby Assam Macaque is mostly born in spring.
It is distributed in Yunnan Province, Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, with the present stock of about ten thousand.
