National Games

 

 The First National Games

The First National Games was held inBeijingfrom September 13 toOctober 3, 1959. 10,658 athletes from 30 delegations took part in the 36 competitions and 6 performances. During the Games, four world records and 106 national records were broken.

 The Second National Games

The Second National Games was held inBeijingfromSeptember 11 to 28, 1965, with 22 competitions and one performance. 5,922 athletes from 30 delegations took part in the Games and broke 9 world and 130 national records.

 The Third National Games

The Third National Games was held inBeijingfromSeptember 12 to 28, 1975. The Games was divided into two groups: adult and youth, with the former having 28 competitions and the latter having 8 competitions and 7 performances. Altogether 12,497 athletes from 31 delegations participated in the Games, breaking 3 world records and leveling two others. Sixty-two national records and 58 national youth records were also broken.

 The Fourth National Games

The Fourth National Games was held inBeijingfromSeptember 15-30, 1979, participated in by 15,189 athletes from 31 delegations. The Games was also divided into the adult group, with 34 competitions, and the youth group, with 2 competitions. Five world records, 3 world youth records, 102 national records and 5 national youth records were broken during the Games.

 The Fifth National Games

The Fifth National Games was held inShanghaifrom September 18 toOctober 1, 1983, the first one that was held outsideBeijing. 8,943 athletes from 31 delegations took part in performingWushu(martial arts) and 25 competitions, with judo, sailing, field hockey and eurhythmics first entering the National Games.

 The Sixth National Games

The Sixth National Games was held in GuangzhouinSouth China'sGuangdongProvincefrom November 20 toDecember 5, 1987. 6,766 athletes from 39 delegations took part in 44 competitions to compete for 340 gold, 342 silver and 342 bronze medals. Fifteen world records, 21 national records and 85 national records were broken.

 The Seventh National Games

The Seventh National Games witnessed the participation of the largest number of athletes in any of the sports events in Chinese history. The Games was staged in two venues: theBeijingMunicipalityand theChengduCity.

The Games in theChengduvenue was held from August 15 to 24 and 40 delegations took part in 15 competitions to compete for 94 gold, 93 silver and 93 bronze medals, breaking 14 world records, leveling one world record, breaking 16 national records and leveling 2 national records.

The Games in theBeijingvenue was held in September 4 to 15, taken part in by 7,481 athletes from 44 delegations. During the 12 days, 4 world records, 34 Asian records and 117 national records were broken.

 The Eighth National Games

The Eighth National Games was held inShanghaifromOctober 12 to 24, 1997with the participation ofHong Kongdelegation for the first time. 7,000 athletes from 48 delegations took part in the competition of 332 items in 34 events to vie for 319 gold medals. TheMarathon, speed skating and short course speed skating were held inBeijingCityandHeilongjiangProvince.

 The Ninth National Games

The Ninth National Games was held inGuangzhou, the capital city ofSouth China'sGuangdongProvincefromNovember 11 to 25, 2001. 8,608 athletes from 45 delegations took part in the competition of 345 items in 30 events to vie for 411 gold, 398 silver and 405 bronze medals. During the Games, 7 world records, 9 Asian records and 37 national records were broken, demonstrating rapid development of Chinese sports.
