The Feiyunya Museum of National Minorities' Festivals, located inside the ancient buildings of Yuetan Temple and Yanyunge Pavilion, mainly stages the Exhibition of Guizhou National Festivals and Cultures and was founded in 1988.
The museum has collected about 1,000 items of relics of minority nationality festivals and a number of collections of writing, pictures and audiovisual tapes, including the ethnic minority groups of Miao, Bouyei, Tong, Yi, Shui, Hui, Gelao, Zhuang, Yao and Tujia. Their festival costumes are very unique. Just take the festival costumes of the Miao Nationality for instance. There are more than 20 kinds of best clothes in addition to the exquisitely made silver hat, necklace, earrings, and bracelets. For national musical instruments they have different kinds ofLusheng(a reed-pipe wind instrument),Mangtong(a concussion instrument),Kouxianqing(a wind instrument),Niutuiqing(a plucking instrument),Sanyanxiao(a vertical bamboo flute with three holes),Jiemeixiao(a vertical bamboo flute played by two girls together),Leyou-lelang,Pipa(a plucked string instrument with a fretted fingerboard), bronze drum, skin drum,Suona(a woodwind instrument with seven holes on the obverse and one on the reverse of the tube), andMangluo(a kind of gong). Also collected are the handicrafts of embroidery, cross-stitch work, wax printing, weaving as well as sacrificial utensils and articles for daily use.
Also on display are pictures, inscriptions, audio-video tapes and material objects for traditional festival activities such asSheng(a reed-pipe wind instrument) playing, singing in antiphonal style, drum treading, horse racing, bull fighting, sheep fighting, bird fighting, martial arts, boat rowing, carrying husband in a sedan chair, archery, husk-bag tossing,Paoxiuqiu(an ancient way for a girl to choose husband), pole climbing, firecracker snatching, hand-shuttlecock playing, a swing ofGuanyin, beating of bronze drum and singing of local Tong Opera, Di Opera and Buyi Opera, etc.
Ten buildings in imitation of the Miao Nationality residential houses are built at the west of Feiyunya. Inside these buildings are four workshops for visiting the wax printing, embroidery, silver ornaments and clay whistles. The handicrafts made in the workshops are also for selling to tourists as souvenirs.
