By adopting Tang Dynasty (618-907) inspired make up, 25-year-old Chen Yanhui from Taiwan has become an overnight internet sensation after posting the final results of her experimental makeup session online.
Due to the uncanny similarity between Chen's photos and the woman depicted in the original Tang portrait, nearly 500,000 internet users tweeted her pictures and spoke highly of her unusual make-up skills.
"She is amazing and if she had been born in the Tang Dynasty, she would have been the emperor's most favored concubine," Chinese micro bloggers wrote .
Chen, who graduated from Taipei University of Education, now lives in the United States. As she has a specific interest in distinctively Chinese-inspired looks, she spent one whole month browsing the internet and doing research on Tang Dynasty portraits, Chen said during an interview.
Last month, she used her own face as a canvas and made herself up in 4 different Tang Dynasty ways. Aside from these looks, she also experimented with 11 different eyebrow styles.
"Generally speaking, it takes at least 3 hours to get the makeup done. I never expected that these photos would spark such popular debate," she said with a big smile, "I will continue to try on different makeup looks from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties."
