Goings-on in China: Woman Fired after Donating Kidney to Boss

Therefore, the boss, in the eyes of the Chinese people, “is biting the hands that feed her”. But the case also raises a red flag that demands attention as China has seen a rapid lapse from virtue while it is making huge progress in the economic sector. A series of incidents in which innocent bystanders came to other’s rescue and were wrongly alleged as perpetrators have deterred people from helping strangers. Sporadic corruption in China’s charity organizations has also discouraged them from donating to help those otherwise desperately mired in poverty.

Their inhibition, in return, worsens the moral fabric of the society deeply transformed by the economic upheaval, leading to a growing public lament about the passing of the one-for-all-and-all-for-one society.

The abridged translated version of the news made headlines in China’s Weibo and many users expressed their sympathy for the divorced woman and outrage about the boss’s ingratitude.

User hejlan wrote: “#Woman Fired after Donating Kidney to Her Boss# After reading the news, I feel very angry. But life has to move on, and can I console myself with the thought that sometimes, ordeals may help one seek a better life?"

User 嘉境2012 wrote: "#Woman Fired after Donating Kidney to Her Boss# The boss is ugly. The victim should have signed an agreement before donation as a hedge against the ungrateful boss. I hope such tragedies will not happen again."

But some users argued that business ethics and social morals should not be confused.

User 文道秋山 wrote: "#Woman Fired after Donating Kidney to Her Boss# There is not enough information about the case. But the woman’s donation and being fired are two different stories. In business, you will surely get fired if you can not fit the post. But individually, the boss should have expressed her thanks, in private at least. Donation does not make it necessary that the woman has to depend on the boss for a living. It is confusing to blindly combine the two matters together."
