False Door of Ika
|
The False Door of Ika is a woodcarving work of the Fifth Dynasty in the Old Kingdom period (2780-2280 B.C.). It is a rare example of a wooden false door since these are usually carved in stone. The soul of the deceased would enter and leave the Land of the Dead through this door. The name and titles of the deceased were inscribed on it in order to perpetuate his memory, and people read them every time they presented him with offerings or recite a funerary formula on his behalf. The tablet above the niche depicts Ika and his wife sitting face to face at a table laden with loaves of bread. The symmetrical structure of the door symbolizes the happiness and harmony of the royal family.
