Shang
Dynasty (About 1600-1100 BC) Listed in:
2005 Excavated by: the Fujian
Province Museum Archeological team

The Maoershan relics are located on Mt. Maoershan,
Fujian Province, and cover an area of 250 square meters. The six kilns found
here are the most well-preserved kilns found to date. The fire
chambers, stoves and chimneys are all well preserved and densely
distributed. The types of stoves also varied. As a flat-blaze kiln with chimney
in the end, it has the fundamental elements of dragon
kiln. So far it is the earliest,
best-preserved dragon kiln found in China.
Maoershan kiln group is the first that mainly produced
black-wearing potteries. The discovery has provided precious reference for the
research on the age, period-division, producing area, stove structure and
firing techniques of black-wearing potteries. Maoershan kilns provide
information on the origin and development of early kilns.
The round kilns, elliptical kilns and dragon kilns were all found in
Maoershan kiln group, showing that the pottery manufacturing industry was
well-developed in south China. The three types of kilns uncovered are overlapped
with each other, suggesting a close relationship between the three, providing
clues for the origin of dragon kilns.
