Internet Literature

The Internet is proving to be a new medium to boost literature. A book, First Intimate Contact, written by Pizi Cai (Rowdy Cai), a Taiwan writer, tells the story of a pair of university students whose romance evolves on the Internet. First Intimate Contact made "Internet literature" popular and basically established the Internet literature's style, which tends to be free, teasing, and improvising in nature.

Since the popularity of First Intimate Contact, many Internet writers, such as Anne Baby and Li Xunhuan, have gained fame among the younger generation. The "Rong Shu Xia"(Under the Banyan) website has become the most successful original literature website in China. On-line writing and on-line reading have changed the original consumption way of literature. Because the publication of on-line works is convenient and cheap, the traditional (paper) method of reading and writing is under great pressure. "Writing expresses" gradually became daily behaviors for many people.

Internet literature has also brought vigor for traditional literature. Most of the Internet writers are young, with a lively and free writing style. Accordingly, their works tend to reflect the latest city trend in the society. But because of these author's originality is not rich, most of the works are also superficial. Therefore, traditional literature has been rekindled.

At the beginning, Internet literature was non-commercial; however, along with some authors' successes, more and more writers have become keen on fame and wealth.

The Internet literature has brought an upsurge in popular writing, which changed the traditional pattern in Chinese literature. Some talented Internet writers have emerged, and some of the popular Internet words are now updating fashionable language more and more quickly. Besides, Internet literature has obtained a big commercial success, and is becoming a new force in publishing circles.
