Internet Literature
The Internet is proving to be a new medium to boost
literature. A book, First Intimate Contact, written by Pizi Cai (Rowdy Cai), a
Taiwan writer, tells the story of a pair of university students whose romance
evolves on the Internet. First Intimate Contact made "Internet literature"
popular and basically established the Internet literature's style, which tends
to be free, teasing, and improvising in nature.
Since the popularity of First Intimate Contact, many Internet writers, such
as Anne Baby and Li Xunhuan, have gained fame among the younger generation. The
"Rong Shu Xia"(Under the Banyan) website has become the most successful original
literature website in China. On-line writing and on-line reading have changed
the original consumption way of literature. Because the publication of on-line
works is convenient and cheap, the traditional (paper) method of reading and
writing is under great pressure. "Writing expresses" gradually became daily
behaviors for many people.
Internet literature has also brought vigor for traditional
literature. Most of the Internet writers are young, with a lively and free
writing style. Accordingly, their works tend to reflect the latest city trend in
the society. But because of these author's originality is not rich, most of the
works are also superficial. Therefore, traditional literature has been
rekindled.
At the beginning, Internet literature was non-commercial; however, along with
some authors' successes, more and more writers have become keen on fame and
wealth.
The Internet literature has brought an upsurge in popular writing, which
changed the traditional pattern in Chinese literature. Some talented Internet
writers have emerged, and some of the popular Internet words are now updating
fashionable language more and more quickly. Besides, Internet literature has
obtained a big commercial success, and is becoming a new force in publishing
circles.
