Introduction to Red Poppy Ladies' Percussion
Red Poppy Ladies' Percussion, founded in 1999, is China's only
female percussion team. The team is made up of a group of energetic female
percussionists, normally numbering eight but sometimes even more if needed. Most
of the percussionists on the team, with an average age of only 22, have over ten
years of music experience and professional percussion training.
Red Poppy aims to be
a unique percussive music band by delivering featured Chinese music alongside
featured aural-vision presentation in a creative and contemporary way. Such characteristics
make their performances real crowd- pleasers.
The percussion group travels with over 40 types of Chinese and Western
percussion instruments, and its music repertoires consist of pieces all composed
especially for the team by professional composers. Under such influences, Red
Poppy is a unique musical ensemble that performs multi-culture, new age and
world music.
Red Poppy opts for musical diversity and visual stimulation rather than
concentrating on traditional warrior beats. The group presents intriguing
arrangements to different tunes, due in part to the diverse mix of Chinese and
Western composers that contribute to the percussionists' repertoire. A huge part
of Red Poppy's appeal is derived from watching the female percussionists -
vibrant, enthusiastic and powerful -- have the time of their lives.
In the last few years, the group has successfully demonstrated its high-level
quality and elegance of its percussion programs to the public. Since Red Poppy's
inception, its programs have been well received by audiences in Vancouver,
Toronto, the United States, South Africa, Singapore, Macao,
Hong
Kong and China mainland as well as in other countries. Several programs have
been featured on national televisions and other medias, especially the 2001
Chinese New Year Grand Evening Show and the 21st Universiade Closing Performance
in Beijing.
In the future, Red Poppy will make more creative programs, and expects to
perform on an even broader international stage.
