Zuo's Commentary on Spring and Autumn Annals

Zuo Zhuan (Zuo's Commentary on Spring and Autumn Annals) is a famous historical book recording the history of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476BC), and is one of the three commentaries to the book of Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals).

It was said that Zuo Zhuan was written by Zuo Qiuming in the Lu State at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, but the actual compiling time was the mid Warring States Period (475-221BC). Professional historiographers in the Spring and Autumn Period wrote the outlines for the historical events with compact words, and the book of Chun Qiu is one of them. We can learn more detailed historical facts recorded briefly in the simple outline of Chun Qiu through the historical events recorded in Zuo Zhuan.

Besides the important historical events in the Spring and Autumn Period, Zuo Zhuan also contains many ancient legends, reflecting some progressive ideas, such as making light of ghosts, attaching importance to personnel matters, not stressing the absolute allegiance to the king by the subjects.
