Lu has acted as Conductor in as many as 2,000 concerts and operas in Europe and the United States and has cooperated with over 100 world-famous opera houses and symphony orchestras. As the first Asian conductor assuming the director position in the national opera house of Italy, he is proclaimed as “a conductor who has a deeper understanding of Italian operas than Italians” by Italian music commentators. In 2007, he was awarded 'The President Cup' by the Italian President for his exceptional contributions and outstanding achievements made in Italy, followed by the acclaim of "Best Opera" of Europe for the La gazza ladra that he conducted at the 'Rossini Opera Festival' held at Rossini's hometown, Pesaro.

The China National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO) is one of the most outstanding professional symphony orchestras in China. For almost half a century, the CNSO has introduced Chinese audiences to a vast repertoire of classical, romantic, modern and contemporary orchestral works by both Western and Asian composers. In London, a music critic for The Times praised the CNSO as "a mature group with a vital sound". American music critics noted that "the CNSO is an honorable member of the world music stage". In Europe, critics headlined the orchestra as, “A great orchestra appears among the Kings of Orchestral Music".
