Russia celebrates “Tourism Year of China"

A year-long celebration of Chinese culture was staged in Russia over the course of 2013, with an abundance of memorable events and splendid performances.

There were no shortage of luminaries involved, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. Both the leaders gave speeches as the host country kicked off its "Tourism Year of China” in Moscow on March 22, 2013, with the gala opening of “Beautiful China” at the Kremlin Opera.

The inaugural event, staged by China’s Ministry of Culture, was attended by more than 5,000 people. Those in the audience enjoyed a wide range of entertainment, including operas, ballet, martial arts, music and dance from the main ethnic groups of China.

Russia’s “Tourism Year of China" concluded with another performance on November 23, 2013, with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang and Russian Vice Premier Olga Golodets taking part in the ceremony.

Highlights: The Chinese government described the “Tourism Year of China" in Russia was one of the most important events during President Xi Jinping’s first overseas trip as head of state. The bilateral "China-Russia Tourism Year" program, which began last year with the "Tourism Year of Russia" in China, aims to foster tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Previously, the two countries have held a "China-Russia National Year" and the "China-Russia Year of Language".
