The “Fireworks Magician” Cai Guo-qiang opened his exhibition on February 4 in Brasília, Brazil. Titled “Peasant Da Vincis,” the exhibition was made up of two parts: his collection of inventions made by peasants such as homemade planes, helicopters, flying saucers, submarines, racing cars and robots, and his three giant gunpowder drawings.

The works by peasants were representations of the wildest imagination, some of which even defy basic engineering principles. They pieces were contemporary art creations that illustrate in a historical cultural context the emergence of a grassroots force that came with the modernization of China.

Cai’s gunpowder arts depicted the colorful carnivals in Brazil, which showed the national spirit of Brazilians, free, passionate and romantic.

The “Peasant Da Vincis” exhibition was first shown during the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. At the invitation of the Ministry of Culture of Brazil and under the sponsor of the Bank of Brazil, the exhibition traveled to Brasília, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Highlights: The unadorned creative power and affection for the land from Chinese peasants are interlinked with Brazilian culture.
