Chinese Cultural Series in Canada

The National Ballet of China made its Canadian west coast debut in February before a nearly full house at the 2,700-seat Queen Elizabeth Theater.

The acclaimed troupe performed Tchaikovsky's classic Swan Lake after their sold-out shows of Raise the Red Lantern in Montreal.

The audience was amazed by the grace, beauty and technical skill of the performers in their interpretation of the famed story.

The visit by the National Ballet of China marked the start of the Chinese Cultural Series activities in Canada to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

A follow-up of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's 2012 visit to China, the series included Chinese performances in music, dance and drama, as well as exhibitions and seminars, among others, and will be held in major Canadian cities through 2014.

In return, Canada will host similar activities in China.

Highlight:

All of the performances and events will open a door for Canadian people to the magnificence and inclusiveness of Chinese culture, and the heritage and values that the Chinese people cherish most.

In the coming two years, many top art troupes from China, including the National Orchestra of China and the Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe, will come to Canada. And a number of prestigious cultural events, such as the Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition, the China-Canada Literature Forum will also be held in Canada.
