International music masters create “Composing China”

Composing China: China NCPA Concert Hall Orchestra Concertwas unveiled at the National Centre for the Performing Arts on March 17. Top international composers performed their orginal orchestra pieces. Zhang Yi, Deputy Director, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the National Ballet of China, and Kristjan Jarvi, an American conductor, presided over the concert rendering the masters' work.

The international advisor, Zhu Xiaolei, said, "This concert was related to a theme, I hope these works can be preserved for a long time," after the performance.

Composer Kalevi Aho said, "In my mind, it's difficult to integrate five new works in one concert. It is my pleasure that my work can join them. The concert enriches our musical experience."

Highlight: In 2011, the National Grand Theatre launched the projectComposing China, extending olive branches to masters of music composition, such as Robin Holloway, Kalevi Aho, Sebastian Currier and Augusta Read Thomas. They were invited to Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, and Guizot, Yunnan, to experience China on a deeper level, and wrote their music compositions on Chinese subjects. After two years, the composers returned to perform their pieces at this special concert.
