Foreign governments promote Chinese learning

Thailand released an official program titled “你好,我爱你” (Hello, I love you) to promote Chinese in ASEAN countries. The program will first go into effect in Thailand, and then on to other countries, with the aim of enabling one out of six out of all 600 million people in ASEAN countries to master Mandarin within four years. The end result will mean that at least one member of a family can speak Chinese, while other members will be able to speak at least two sentences under the influence of “你好” and “我爱你.” The program will create greater support for China-ASEAN economic cooperation. Huaqiao University in China’s Xiamen became the first pilot endeavor, and now recruits 100 Thai students every year.

While at the same time a small city in Portugal has achieved great success in promoting the Chinese language. The government of Sao Joao da Madeira started working with a local university at the beginning of this year to offer Chinese classes at a few primary schools. The pilot plan proved to be a great success, and was well-received by students and their parents. In July, the Ministry of Education approved Chinese classes as compulsory courses for all third and fourth grade students in Sao Joao da Madeira.

Highlight: Governments of foreign countries attach importance to learning Chinese and find their own way in the hopes of having further cooperation and exchange with China.
