China's art at the Venice Biennale 2013

A 3-D animation work by Miao Xiaochun, one of about 300 Chinese participants, was shown at the Venice Biennale.

As one of the world's most influential art events, the Venice Biennale held its 55th session from June 1 to November 24. The China Pavilion opened in the iconic water city on May 29, uncer the theme of “transfiguration.”

“Transfiguration” was China’s response to the leading theme of this year’s Venice Biennale, the “Encyclopedic Palace,” which points to the all-embracing place where human knowledge is revered.

Chinese artists were well represented, creating an important showcase of the best contemporary artworks from around the world. A virtual Chinese army - at least 300 artists, curators and sponsors - were represented at the main and several peripheral exhibitions, making up one-fifth of the total peripheral exhibitions.

Interest in contemporary Chinese art has grown enormously over the past 20 years. The International Art Venice Biennale first presented artists from the Chinese mainland exactly 20 years ago.

Highlight: Chinese artists took advantage of the international platform, and successfully drew attention to Chinese contemporary art by holding peripheral exhibitions.
