Art Basel Hong Kong

Prior to 2008, there was no international art expo in Hong Kong, so it was considered to be an art desert. But this year, it grasped at the opportunity to become the only city in Asia to hold branch art shows of Art Basel. Kicking off on May 22, Art Basel Hong Kong attracted gallery owners, collectors, artists and art enthusiasts to Hong Kong, to experience its booming art market.

At least half of the participating galleries were from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. Art Basel decided not to open in February because of the Chinese New Year.

Highlight: Hong Kong grasped at the chance to become the only city in Asia to hold a branch Art Basel show this year, helping it to become an art center. The international event fully respected local art and tradition.
