Monkey : Journey to the West

For those living in New York, the Lincoln Center Festival is a summer tradition. It holds art performances over the course of three weekends.

A drama, Monkey: Journey to the West, played an important role at Lincoln Center Festival this year. It was composed from a 16th century Chinese and tells the story of a Chinese monk who travels to India in search of Buddhism. The monkey, which is mentioned in the title, accompanies the monk during the long journey.

Highlight: It is easy to understand the humor in this drama. It has Kung Fu fighting and acrobatics performed in the style of a circus troupe, while featuring cartoons in certain scenes. Some arias choose a more natural way to imitate traditional Chinese dramas, such as unusual high-pitches, but this is more suitable for western audiences. The actors’ performances are lively and active, just like the people in the story who are portrayed as whimsical in their pursuit of freedom.
