They were invited by the government of Kunshan, just 50 kilometers west of Shanghai, as part of the Expo’s "Friendship Day" program to help participants learn about Chinese history and culture. Similar trips have been hosted by other Yangtze Delta cities of Jiaxing, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Zhoushan and Yancheng.
Kunqu Opera, which originated in Kunshan about 600 years ago, is the oldest opera form in China and has joined the UNESCO list of The Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
