Province of Jiangsu

Created in the middle of the last century, the Yangzhou Puppet Troupe is known for its unique style of performance, both flexible and precise. Performers HUA Meixia, XUE Jiayu, YAN Yu and ZHANG Hongliang are the mainstays of this troupe, which has taken part in many artistic activities since it was created. In 1975 and 1981, the troupe was awarded at several national puppet theatre competitions. In 1984, it was invited by the Traditional Nippon Arts Company to perform in 34 Japanese towns in two months. The Yangzhou troupe, whose puppets are said to be “more real than the real thing”, is considered to be one of the best in China.
