An infant prodigy born in 1954 with parents who were both writers, WANG Anyi was able to recite classical poems when she was only four, including Everlasting Regret by poet BAI Juyi (8th century), whose title she was later to use for one of her novels. Since she was first published in 1976, she has ceaselessly produced short stories, novels and essays, winning many literary prizes. Marked by the Cultural Revolution, WANG Anyi brings back to life the alleyways of Shanghai and the countryside of the province of Anhui during this trouble period. Everlasting Regret, published in 1995, won one of the highest Chinese distinctions, the Maodun prize. WANG Anyi is the current president of the Shanghai Writers’ Association.
