ZAO Wou-Ki:Watercolour and Chinese Ink

After a training influenced by two traditions - the Chinese traditions and the European academism - ZAO Wou-Ki decided in 1948 to leave China for France, where he followed the courses of Othon Friesz at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière. There he met Jean-Paul Riopelle, Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, Alberto Giacometti and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. In 1950, ZAO Wou-Ki discovered the work of Paul Klee in Bern and his approach changed radically: his work was no longer figurative, but was influenced by abstract art and rules of freedom. His meeting with Henri Michaux led him to apply again Chinese ink painting techniques, and to develop abstract themes influenced by traditional Chinese painting. His work from the 60s to 2006 will be illustrated by numerous Chinese ink paintings, ink wash drawings on paper and watercolours.

About Europalia Arts Festival
