M HKA presents a key exhibition on the development of contemporary art in China.It features works of three internationally renowned Chinese contemporary artists: XU Zhen, YANG Fudong and YANG Zhenzhong. The exhibition Useful Life was made in ShangArt during the Shanghai Biennial in 2000. It raised hope for more openness to contemporary art from the Chinese authorities: it was the first time that foreign artists were invited and that the authorities tolerated “critical” works. This exhibition illustrates this crucial moment. Among others, works such as Tonight Moon by YANG Fudong and I will die by YANG Zenzhong will be on display.
