Infantization

Infantization brings together a selection of major works by 60 artists from all around China, representatives of the so-called Gelatine Generation. Photography, but also paintings, animations, videos, installations, cartoons, graffiti and digital projections will be on display. The Gelatine Generation grew up in a world without borders following the development of computing. They see themselves as citizens of a global village, free from economic or cultural barriers. Their art is symbolised by colourful forms and stories, in which themes and characters of the consumption culture are prominent. New media are regularly used in their work. With a strong desire to break free of the expectations that the age-old Chinese society has set for them, the Gelatine Generation aims in the first place at an easy and happy life, free from financial problems. The drawback of this approach is the development of a superficial eccentricity and an artistic and spiritual vacuum. Infantization shows how this generation tries to confront the prevailing commercial trends and how they contribute to the development of a visual culture that characterises China of the 21st century.

About Europalia Arts Festival
